"I don't know how to change it, but I know if I keep talking about how dirty it is out here, somebody’s gonna clean it up", -Tupac Shakur
I address issues of racism and discrimination in my artwork by revealing the experiences many black individuals face in white America. I embrace discomfort in my work by exploring aggression through imagery and text. Pulling from my experience as a young black man, I am expressing my struggles in the black community. I use art to engage in discussions that are not usually talked about such as; police brutality, micro aggressions, and exclusion. My work requires observation and hopefully results in a reaction that prompts self-reflection from the viewer part by examining their role in “the system”. While acknowledging intersectionality, I am asking my audience to consider what America conceptualizes as normal. Through my work, I show the oppression of the society we live in and find power in addressing the struggles of marginalized groups.
